How Your DFI Site is Backed Up

Jim DFI BackupKeeping your site backed-up plays an essential role in maintaining a secure site. Have you have ever lost files, pictures, movies, or other valuable information on your computer due to hard disk failure? If you have, did you have a backup where you kept copies of that information? If not, you understand the importance of having backups.

DFI provides two backup systems for your site.

Level 1: DFI Server Backup: Full Server Backup

You full server is automatically backed-up daily. This backup maintains the status of your database and file server for 24 hours. The backup is generally executed at around midnight Pacific time for our servers in San Jose and at midnight Tokyo time for our servers in Tokyo. In practice this means that if some mishap such as someone accidentally deleting data, the site ceases operation due to a problem with updating a site add-on, you have a window of time during which you can restore the site to the condition it was at approximately midnight the night before. Obviously, if your problem occurred 24-hours prior to that, you cannot use Level 1 Server backup to restore your site to a backup older than that of last night's backup. One thing to note is that the data is backed up to the same server. This could mean lossage of the backup in the event that the server should suffer a severe crash or be lost due to a disaster.

Level 2: Optional DFI Site Backup: Site Files and Database Backup

Your complete site and database is backed up automatically every 24 hours to the Amazon S3 cloud servers. You have a full 31 day backup meaning that you can go back to any date for the past 31 days and restore the site to what it was on that day. In addition, everytime an add-on that touches the core of your is installed, the site is automatically backed up as well so that it can be restored to its orginal operating condition if the installation should go bad.
Since the backup is on a server completely diffrerent from your server, the data remains available even in the event that your server should lose all its data. Actually, your backup is going to the S3 Amazon Cloud where it remains till you need it...hopefully never.
